Reframing and aspect ratios

Turning landscape footage vertical without cropping the subject out of shot.

A 16:9 recording centre-cropped to 9:16 usually cuts the speaker in half. Reframing tracks the subject instead.

Changing the shape

Set the aspect ratio in the top bar, or ask:

reframe this to vertical

The first clip you upload sets the project's ratio automatically, based on its own dimensions.

How the crop moves

The window follows whoever is speaking and eases between positions, so the movement reads as a camera move rather than a jump cut. On a two-person recording the frame moves when the speaker changes — the same decision an editor makes when cutting between cameras.

You can hold it still where movement would be distracting:

Fitting rather than cropping

If you'd rather see the whole frame than a crop of it, ask for it to be fitted instead — the picture is scaled down with the space around it filled rather than cut away.

Limits

A crop is still a crop. Anything outside your original frame is gone; nothing is invented to fill the edges. Footage where the subject leaves frame entirely falls back to a held composition rather than hunting for them.
